What Can Go Wrong If Your Sewage System Isn’t Frequently Emptied?
- Your sewage tank may leak, and an abundance of water around the drainage field of your septic tank might appear.
- Sinks in your house could drain slowly (or not drain at all) and toilets take longer to flush.
- A foul and nasty smell could arise in the area of your septic tank, cesspit or sewage treatment plant.
- If your sewage discharges into a watercourse, there may be overflowing sludge or scum on the water.
- Solids could enter the soakaway, leading to soakaway damage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to the most common questions we receive about Cesspit and Septic Tank Emptying.
A cesspit is a sealed tank underground that collects sewage and wastewater, a somewhat holding tank which does not process or treat the waste collected.
Wastewater enters the tank, where solids settle to the bottom and lighter substances float to the top. Bacteria break down the organic matter in the sludge, while partially treated liquid accumulates in the middle layer. The effluent is retained for a while before being pumped out for disposal.
Cesspits require emptying on a regular basis. The time between emptying is based on several factors such as the holding capacity and the number of people using the cesspit. Some tanks may need to be emptied monthly, some may only require once annually.

A septic tank is also sealed underground; however, it is made up of two chambers, separating the solids from the liquids.
Septic tanks like cesspits are buried underground. A septic tank uses a simple treatment process that is designed to allow wastewater to be discharged . The tank consists of two chambers. In one chamber, solids collect at the bottom of the tank where decomposition begins. The liquid then moves into a second chamber where excess solids float and waste liquid drains from the tank into a soakaway.
