As a homeowner, there really is nothing worse than blocked drains outside. But how to unblock your drains and who’s responsibility it is to unblock them are questions we’re asked frequently.
You may have already attempted to resolve this yourself, but if your drain isn’t showing any signs of improvement or you are experiencing flooding and/or overflow – then it might be time to call in the experts!
Read on to find out more about the signs of blockages and what to do if you have blocked drains.
What Is A Blocked Drain & What Are The Signs?
There are lots of signs that your drains could be blocked. Perhaps your toilet isn’t draining properly, or there’s a nasty smell coming from the sink.
We’ve put together a list so that you can identify any possible issues:
- Water is draining slowly
- Foul odours
- Gurgling sounds
- Low level of water in your toilet
- Less drain pressure
- Backfilling
When treated early and correctly, these are issues that are easily fixable.
What Commonly Causes A Drain Blockage?
A blocked drain isn’t necessarily caused by just one element. It is likely to be a combination of a few things culminating in a noticeable blockage.
Below are 10 of the most common causes of a blocked drain:
- Hair
- Soap (yes soap!)
- Oil, grease, and fat
- Food waste
- Wipes
- Feminine Products
- Offset pipes
- Mineral build-up
- Plants and leaves
- Too much toilet paper (honestly!)
Unfortunately, whilst most people are aware that wipes, feminine products, and excessive toilet roll will eventually block your drains, it is still one of the most common reasons for a blockage. Not only is it bad for your pipes, but it’s also not good for the environment!
Who Is Responsible For Blocked Drains As A Homeowner?
If you are a homeowner, then you are responsible for any drains within your property line. You are not responsible for privately owned sewers that you share with another landowner/neighbour, or portions of the sewer outside of your property line.
If you are a tenant in a rented property, you should contact your landlord/agent or housing association as they are responsible for your drains and any issues or blocked drains.
Who Is Responsible For Blocked Drains Outside Of My Property Line?
If your blockage is not within your property line, there may be an issue with the drain or sewer system which is connected to a public network.
If this is the case, then you are not responsible for any fixing or maintenance. This is the responsibility of the local water company. As a property owner, you should contact the local water company or local council.
What To Do If I’m Not Sure If My Drains Are Private Or Not?
If you are unsure of whether your property is connected to a public or private sewer, you can take the following steps:
- Check with your sewerage company
- Check your title deeds
- Request a sewer map from your sewerage company
- Check with your local authority
