Drainage Gully | When Do They Need Cleaning?

A blocked gully is not only a nuisance, but can also cause damage if left over time.

Once a gully becomes blocked and stops allowing water to be redirected and drain efficiently, this can cause damage to your property.

At (ABS) A Better Service Ltd, we pride ourselves on being able to provide quick and expert gully cleaning to both domestic and commercial clients.

What Is a Gully?

A drainage Gully (also known as a Gulley) is designed to collect and redirect water away from your property. When your gully or drains become clogged with debris, it can obstruct the flow of water and cause drainage issues. This in turn can cause flooding.

Flooding or pooling of water around the property can cause damage to the infrastructure, foundations, or landscaping. With water damage comes dampness and mould, so it is important to address the issue as soon as possible.

Where Do You Find Gullies?

To be able to clean your gully, firstly you need to know where it is and what it looks like!

Your gully is most commonly located around the side or back of your property and usually at the bottom of a rainwater downpipe. Often, they have a square or round grid at the top of them.

Depending on your property type, these may also be positioned beneath any outside taps or discharge pipes.

Why Is Gully Cleaning Important?

Routine and regular gully cleaning is important to ensure water is able to drain away efficiently to prevent flooding and damage to your property.

A blocked gully can cause surface water to build up over time. If the water has nowhere to go it will pool and eventually cause flooding. By maintaining the gully regularly, you can prevent debris from accumulating and prevent the risk of flooding and damage.  After all, prevention is cheaper than cure!

How Often Do Gullies Need Cleaning?

This can depend greatly on the level of usage and location. For instance, if you are in an area with high traffic or heavy rainfall then you may require more frequent cleaning.

We recommend that your gullies should be cleaned at least once per year. However, it’s important to monitor gullies regularly and ensure blockages don’t have a chance to build up.

Signs Of a Gully Blockage

There are a few things that you should look out for, or a few things you may have noticed already such as:

  • Unpleasant odours – these can be coming from your gullies or drains
  • Overflowing water – you may notice this more during heavy rainfall
  • Debris build-up – any debris around or in your gully can cause it to stop the flow of water

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to call the experts to assess the situation and remove any blockages to prevent further issues.

Who Should Clean A Gully?

It’s possible for you to remove any surface debris on top of the grate. You should ensure you are wearing protective clothing and gloves as this can be a messy job.

However, we do not recommend that you attempt to remove the grate and clear any debris below it. This should be left to the experts. We have industry-leading equipment which means that we can quickly and safely remove any build-up and debris from inside the grate.
